Serhiy Zhadan

Serhiy Zhadan (Сергі́й Жада́н, 1974) – poet, writer, journalist, translator, philologist from Kharkiv. His novel "Anarchy in the UKR" (2005) got into the the final round of the Russian award named "National Best-seller" in 2008. In 2010, he published a novel under the title "Voroshilovograd" (Ворошиловград) – his most succesful work so far, also labelled by the reviewers as the manifest of the current generation. He was marked an "occurence of the post-Soviet literature" by several Russian writers and critics in a poll within the "Druzhba Narodov" journal. The latest book of this young author named "Mesopotamia" (Месопотамія, 2014) has an original form consisting of "nine stories prosaic and thirty poems specifying". The current leader of book sales in Ukraine. Babylon-like stories, similitudes talked about for those that are interested in questions of love and death. Philosophical meditations, fantastic images, original metaphors and a specific sense of humour, these are the characteristic features of the whole creative work of S. Zhadan, also present in this book.

Depeche Mode by Serhiy Zhadan

- In 1993, tragic turbulence takes over Ukraine in the post-communist spin-off. As if in somnambulism, Soviet war veterans and upstart businessmen listen to an American preacher of whose type there were plenty at the time in the post-Soviet territory. In Kharkiv, the young communist headquarters is now an advertising agency, and a youth radio station brings Western music, with Depeche Mode in the lead, into homes of ordinary people. In the middle of this craze three friends, an anti-Semitic Jew Dogg Pavlov, an unfortunate entrepreneur Vasia the Communist and the narrator Zhadan, nineteen years of age and unemployed, seek to find their old pal Sasha Carburetor to tell him that his step-father shot himself dead. Characters confront elements of their reality, and, tainted with traumatic survival fever, embark on a sad, dramatic and a bit grotesque adventure.

Interesting fact about Serhiy’s writing, as noted by critics, is that his prose is very poetic and his poetry is very prosaic.

Serhiy Zhadan is the most popular poet of the post-independence generation in Ukraine. His work speaks to the disillusionment, difficulties and ironies that the collapse of the Soviet Union has brought, and his readings fill large auditoriums. Originally the enfant terrible of Ukrainian letters, Serhij Zhadan, now in his thirties, is considered the most important poet of the decade and even one of the leading voices of the last century.

Poznámka kritikov: "Interesting fact about Serhiy’s writing, as noted by critics, is that his prose is very poetic and his poetry is very prosaic. This, along with masterful improvisation and play on words that received a flattering ‘the verbal jazz’ tag, has been noted in all his works and is, by far, considered his trademark. Theme wise, he writes about his generation and the epoch he is living in, he is its witness and he neither cares about the weight of literary authority over him, nor about the impression his words might have on another; Serhiy Zhadan simply creates."

Depeche Mode Review

The novel is set at the time of tragic turbulence that took over the country – Ukraine – in the post-communist spin-off. Zhadan places his characters in controversial confrontation with elements of his reality such as corrupt militia, surges against the Roma community who, in turn, were involved in a game of their own, troubled and radically criminal youth, angry and hunted by the city’s authorities. Tainted with traumatic survival fever, the novel is a combination of sad and somewhat poetic drama and a black comedy, dark and ultra-humorous. The book, though telling a desperately hopeless story in retrospect, is optimistic due to its light and playful ornament that envelopes deep and tearful events, and the author’s voice in it is clear and strong.

“I just do not divide the past into Soviet and anti-Soviet.” - Serhiy Zhadan

Serhii Zhadan’s Voroshylovhrad to be adapted for film

It was reported recently that movie director Yaroslav Lodyhin had begun preparations for making the film Voroshylovhrad based on the eponymous novel by Serhii Zhadan. A thorough search is going on for sources of funding in Ukraine and abroad (it will take 500,000 to a million dollars to carry out the project). Concurrently, the writer and the director are working on a documentary based on the adaptation of Voroshylovhrad. One can see the result on YouTube. The Day phoned Serhii ZHADAN to know more about the new plan.
