Belarusian Literature

The contemporary Belarusian literature finds itself in a situation of a strong competition with the volumes of book production in Russia and translations of the world literature. The term "national literature" in Belarus today is specific for its literary works, developing in the context of a formal bilingualism, which, in practice, represents the predominance of Russian language. As far as the genre structure is concerned, Belarus is not an exception in the world trends, aiming towards "light" genres (detective novels of all kind, fantasy novels, etc.). From the point of view of topics, in the "high quality" literature, prevailing topics usually are: World War II, Chernobyl, the Belarusian countryside, also with new motives appearing: general facts on ongoing processes and the current life in Belarusian cities. Besides that, experimentation in style and form is present.

What is significant for the contemporary Belarusian literature is the co-existence of two forms of literary works: "official" and "alternative". The first of the two is basically represented by members of The Association of Writers of Belarus led by Mikalai Charhinets. The second – The Association of Belarusian Writers. The poet and prose writer, Uladzimir Niakliaeu is considered the main opponent. However, the contemporary literature is rather a literature of "individualists", out of whom each creates their own art world and that is why hardly any institutional affiliation influences the creative work of real artists.

Celkom zaujímavé by mohli byť jazyky, v akých spisovateľ písal.

Počas vojny emigrovalo niekoľko bieloruských spisovateľov do cudziny, väčšinou do USA, avšak len málo z nich sa vrátilo naspäť do vlasti.

Vyšla v dvoch častiach v rokoch 1977 a 1982. U nás v rokoch 1981 a 1984 vyše šesťstostranové svojím spôsobom epochálne dielo vyšlo ako "Blokádní denníky" a "Kniha o blokádě" v pražskom Lidovom nakladatelství. Kniha stavia predovšetkým na zápiskoch (z prvého zhruba trištvrte roka vojny a najťažších mesiacov blokády Leningradu) troch ľudí rozdielneho sociálneho pôvodu i záberu.

Dvaja muži a jedna žena.

Nacisti spolu s ukrajinskými dobrovoľníkmi uväznili miestnych obyvateľov do stodoly, ktorú zapálili. Zahynulo 149 ľudí, z toho 75 detí. http://img.cas.sk/img/11/gallery/1628662_pamatnik-socha-chatyn.jpg a http://img.ct24.cz/cache/900x700/article/46/4502/450148.jpg?1363913448

Svetlana Alexievich: Belarusian Language Is Rural And Literary Unripe

Išlo naozaj o nedorozumenie? Článok o súčasnej bieloruskej spisovateľke a malom faux pax. (http://news.yahoo.com/guessing-heats-2014-nobel-literature-prize-083937050.html)

“A wave of protest went through the Belarusian independent media when Alexievich was quoted to have said the the Belarusian language was “rural and literary unripe” («Беларуская мова вельмі вясковая і літаратурна нявысьпелая»,), which is why she chose to write in Russian only and considered herself to belong to Russian culture.”

“So far it remains unclear whether the writer and the German journalist have misunderstood each other or whether Alexievich for some reason chose to make a provocative statement.”

Autorka o svojej tvorbe.

“If you look back at the whole of our history, both Soviet and post-Soviet, it is a huge common grave and a blood bath. An eternal dialog of the executioners and the victims. The accursed Russian questions: what is to be done and who is to blame. The revolution, the gulags, the Second World War, the Soviet-Afghan war hidden from the people, the downfall of the great empire, the downfall of the giant socialist land, the land-utopia, and now a challenge of cosmic dimensions - Chernobyl. This is a challenge for all the living things on earth. Such is our history. And this is the theme of my books, this is my path, my circles of hell, from man to man.”

The Even Number

The girl goes shopping.
The girl buys camomile tea,
A packet of twenty teabags.
The girl takes the tea home.
The girl pulls out the teabags one by one,
Telling fortunes — He loves me.
He loves me not. Loves me. Loves me not —
Although she already knows the way it goes
With the even numbers.
But what else can she do?
Once again, all the packets of twenty five
Have been snapped up by other girls.

The final stop on the city railway.

And there was the sky,
The final stop in his careless dreams,
After six days of travelling in the rain.

And on the seventh day,
There was sun and he saw
How bad the other six had been.

And there were sail boats
And steamships and buoys
With the warning ‘No Swimming Beyond This Point.’

And they were the only two people in the whole world,
Like Adam and Eve or a troubadour and his lady
— except for the seagulls and the speedboats.

And she was topless,
With an apple bulging out
Of the pocket of her fashionable ‘short shorts’.
She looked like a tennis player
Ready for the first serve.

There was no need to call ‘second service’.

A ešte jedna z jeho básní:

Post-Impressionism

I remember when I was a child
I’d try and climb up on my granny’s stove —
And my arms would sink up to the shoulders
In the black sea of sunflower seeds
She was trying to get dried.

I remember when I was older
The seeds were drying really quickly
And my girlfriend wasn’t shy
About tucking in right in front of me,
Hulling them with her teeth,
And a husk would be hanging off her lip,
And didn’t put me off kissing her one bit.

And I was removing it,
Carefully, like a bomb disposal officer,
Because the first touch
Could easily be the last one,
And I was looking forward to the sequel:
On the stove some new seeds
Were almost dry.

That’s why I know
As much as Van Gogh about sunflowers
And about pumpkins
A lot more.

Ales Adamovič autor diela "Leningradská blokáda" stavia predovšetkým na zápiskoch troch ľudí rozdielneho sociálneho pôvodu i záberu: Georgija Alexejeviča Kňazeva, historika, čiastočne ochrnutého riaditeľa Archívu Akadémie vied, Juru Riabinkina, pätnásťročného chlapca, ktorý pre slabý zrak nemôže byť vysnívaným námorným kadetom, a Lidije Georgijevny Ochapkinovej, matky dvoch malých detí, ktorej zápisky vznikali tesne po prežitých rokoch vojny, aby sa na všetky hrôzy nezabudlo. Tieto zápisky len občas dopĺňajú záznamy či spomienky ďalších osôb, vrátane Daniila Granina, ten vtedy počas zákopovej vojny bojoval v prednej línii obrancov Leningradu.

Symbols in Belarusian literature:

Sun, Moon, Stars, Venus. The shine of these sky objects was usually associated with nobility of soul, valor, glory, even generosity. Sometimes such parables as"moonlight dispelling the darkness of night" were even used (Mialet Smatrycki).

Cross was the most often used symbol to show the readiness to fight for the true Christian belief, heroism of ancestors in establishing Christianity.

Out of the arms, the favorite symbol was Arrow - symbol of the heroic defence of homeland, and another sense is nobility of the intentions.

Heart and Hand were most often depicted parts of human body. The heart was often pierced by arrow or sword. These symbol meant the readiness of the owner to selfsacrifice. The arrow in hand was indicating the antiquity of family.

River or water source meant the unexhausting life force, and generally life.

Eagle and Falcon - were symbolising the hight of the family and the military might, respectively.

All dukes had a Crown in their coat of arms.

The structure of epigram included usually the list of the high human qualities of the person followed by the wishes of prosperity, longevity, etc.

In 1991-92 he was acting co-chairman of the Secretariat of the Union of Soviet Writers. But his main literary period was between 1965 and 1985, under Leonid Brezhnev, when there was strict censorship. Although he was a member of the Soviet Writers Union he could not tell the whole truth about the horrors of the partisan war in Belarussia during the Second World War and could not say a word about NKVD-led punitive squads in his war books - the two-volume Partisans (1960-63), his novella Victory (1965) and The Khatyn Story (1974). But for his war stories he was awarded a literary prize by the Russian Ministry of Defence. He also won a Belarussian State Prize.

Krátky úryvok z histórie bieloruskej poézie (15.-16. stor.):

The birth of a printed poetry is a sign of the high level of the development of national culture. Here we account the stages of elevation of the Old Belarusian Poetry during the early periods of Renaissanse and Barocco. This time was characterised by creation of rich polylingual poetical heritage by F. Skaryna, S. Budny, A. Ryms^a, V. Tiapinski, L. Mamonic^, L. Zyzani, H. Pel'hrimouski, M. Smatrycki, I. Trucevic^, F. Ievlevic^ and others. Much of the old belarusian poetry was written in Latin creating "New Latin Belarusian Poetry". Old Belarusian, Polish, Chech and Bulgarian (Church-Slavic) were other languages of poetical expression in XVI-XVII c. Belarus. Several literary societies emerged in XVI-XVII c. Belarus (the central part of the Grand Duche of Lithuania - GDL- at that time), mainly in Niasviz^, Vil'na, Kuteinsk and Polacak which have developed an evolved belarusian theory of versification.

Vasiľ Bykav: Kniha: Piata šibenica, Dožiť do úsvitu

Belarusian literary journal Dziejaslou ("Verb") to the network.
Dziejaslou emerged as an independent journal for liberal authors. Against all odds, it was registered by the Ministry of Information and is now a legal bi-monthly publication. Since 2005, readers have been able to subscribe via the state distribution system Belposhta; access outside the capital city remains problematic, however, because of the state monopoly on distribution.
Today, Dziejaslou is the most influential independent title in Belarus covering literature, criticism and the arts. The journal unites a growing community of established writers and talented young authors, publishing writing rejected by official journals. They include: Ryhor Baradulin, Uladzimier Niaklajeu, Uladzimier Arlou, Sviatlana Aleksijevich, Ales Razanau and many others. Dziejaslou is also highly valued for its representation of the classical literary heritage of Vasil Bykau, Uladzimier Karatkevich, Larysa Henijush and Ales Adamovich.
Dziejaslou stands for the survival of Belarusian literature and culture; it defends liberty and freedom of expression for writers and journalists, and their right to publish without censorship.

Kastuś Akuła - zopár základných informácii o známom bieloruskom autorovi

Apart from the prose of Masiej Siadnioǔ, the novels of Kastuś Akuła (pen-name of Alaksandr Kačan, who is also known, for poetry, as Michaś Kazyr) are the most substantial contributions to emigre Belarusian fiction. Not of world quality, unlike, for example, the prose of Sakrat Janovic (b. 1936) in Poland, Akuła none the less achieved more than most of his contemporaries with his various ambitious and wide-ranging publications which include a novel in English.
After serving in the military during World War II, in 1947 he moved to Canada, where he was one of the founders of the Canadian Association of Belarusians, and its first chairman. He was a prolific contributor to the magazine Zvažaj!. His first work of prose, Zmaharnyja darohi, reveals an insight into Belarusian life during World War II.

Frantsishak Alyakhnovich was a well-known theatrical writer, director and journalist in West Belarus. He was editor of the newspaper Беларускі звон (Byelaruski zvon) published in Vilnius.

In 1926 he decided to stay in East Belarus after a conference in Minsk. After a couple of months he got arrested by the NKVD and sent to Solovki prison camp. He spent seven years in the Gulag and was exchanged for Branislaw Tarashkyevich, a West Belarusian politician held in Polish prison, in 1933.

Alyakhnovich's Gulag experience became a basis for his 1934 book of memoirs У капцюрох ГПУ (U kaptsyurokh HPU, In the claws of the GPU), that was later translated into several languages.

During the Second World War, Frantsishak Alyakhnovich was editor of the newspaper Беларускі глас (Byelaruski hlas, Belarusian voice) published in Vilnius. Apart from that, he was also one of the leaders of the Belarusian Independence Party - a Belarusian Christian Democratic underground antifascist organization led by padre Vincent Hadleŭski.

In 1944, Frantsishak Alyakhnovich was assassinated.

Francishak Alachnovič - niečo o tvorbe:

His first play was, in fact, written in prison, In the Antokal District (Na Antokali, 1914-15), and it is a skilful and lively vaudeville showing many of the typical middle-class residents of one particular district of Vilna. Other plays range from such basically comic character sketches to, for example, historical dramas like Butrym Niamira (1918; based on one of Lastouski's legends), In the Village (Na vioscy, 1916), a study of the effect of town life on a village girl, Sometime (Kalis', 1917), a revolutionary drama about the workers, The Devil and the Old Woman (Chort i baba, 1918), a satirical fairy tale, or such serious dramas as Shadows (Cieni, 1919), a portrait of the moral uncertainties of a weakened and deeply disturbed intelligentsia, Mr. Cabinet Minister (Pan Minister, 1922), a political comedy about various aspects of the nationalist movement, or -- most unexpectedly -- Paulinka's Betrothal (Zaruchyny Paulinki, 1921), a happy ending for Kupala's classic.

experimentovaní s jazykom a formou básne.

Article about belarusian literature in 21th century and about how to make it more wanted among people nowadays.

Alexander Lukashenko about this topic:
"Frankly, I do not believe in the twilight of the literary era. At least in Belarus. After all, literature has always been a means of understanding of the world and a means of upbringing in our nation's life. No wonder poetry and prose by Kupala and Kolas, Bogdanovich and Melezh, Karatkevich and Bykov is a source of national pride for generations of Belarusians. Why doesn’t such a high bar raised by our great writers correspond to the current state of the literary process? Maybe venerable writers are hindered by inertia of thinking, and the younger generation does not have enough wisdom and experience. Or is it due to the change of the times? Maybe our literature is developing in line with worldwide trends and lost traditions of national literary school."

Opinion poll on theme "Why don't Belarusians choose modern Belarusian literature?" -> Here

Quoting the article:
"Viliya:
These novels are about something unusual, so unusual that not all might be interested in reading them. Another problem is a difficult writing style. We opened several books in Belarusian but words there are very tricky.

In short, literature is modern, but not very popular. Authors who put books to bed do not want to popularize their works. So people don't know much about contemporary Belarusian art.

However, Belarusians do not mind reading Belarusian literature. Minskers love historical novels, fantasy and postmodernism. All these books are on the shelves, at least in the library. But even the senior librarian remembered only two contemporary Belarusian writers."

Pathological state of consciousness with the deepest fears because of a historical trauma.'' A partisan is a Belarus typical figure which is associated with World War II in Belarus. Klinau's philosophy is that culture and art are the only way out of the deep misery of his country.

I think it's very important to include Vasil Bykov in this project.
V. Bykov was Belarusian writer and social activist, a veteran of World War II.

Most of his works are novels which describes situation in Belarusia during Great Patriotic War. He was trying to show the moral choice of the person in the most dramatic moments of life.

He was born on 19th of June, 1924 in the village Gobies which is located in Ushachi Vitebsk region. In his childhood he was interested in drawing. He was definitely born with artistic soul. He graduated from the 8th grade school in the village Kublichi, later on studied at the sculpture department of the Vitebsk Art School (1939-1940), which he left due to the cancellation of scholarships. Later on he did continiue as an external student.

A ešte viac.

In Belarus, being an academic means that you work in an institution controlled by the state. Sometimes you cannot be a true scholar because you have to produce the "official truth". Otherwise you risk being repressed for disloyalty.
A good illustration of that is a case (in 2012) of Hrodna University in western Belarus, where a number of prominent university teachers were put under pressure for fulfilling their professional as well as civil activity. A number of solidarity initiatives emerged to support repressed academics. Such campaigns may indicate the emergence of genuine civil society in Belarus.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko wants Belarusian writers to create ideas, characters and books that will be interesting for the people in the 21st century. He made the statement at a meeting with creative intellectuals on 23 October, BelTA has learned.

Belarusian literature is modern, but not very popular. Authors who put books to bed do not want to popularize their works. So people don't know much about contemporary Belarusian art.

Natalia Batrakova, writer:
I believe that contemporary Belarusian literature is looking for its place and ways of development. These must be authors and books not only for 'domestic consumption' but also those that would bring the entire literature to a higher level. I mean at the level of emotions and soul.

Natalia Batrakova is one of the most reputed Belarusian writers. Her books do not need to be advertized in Belarus. She says that that the recognition of the reader is the most important thing for a writer. And in order to gain this recognition, one needs to work hard.

krátky úryvok z práce Ivany Džundovej o Súčasnej bieloruskej poézii

V súčasnej bieloruskej poézii nachádzame množstvo tradičných i novátorských

dalsia citacia k teme -Lukashenko vyzyva bieloruských autorov ku tvorbe a novým nápadom. Obáva sa o budúcnosť bieloruskej literatúry.

“I wonder why we have not seen the books like ‘War and Peace’, ‘Virgin Soil Upturned’ in the past 20-30 years. Does it mean the lack of talents? Or is this due to the objective life conditions when a book stops to be the main source of information?” the head of state asked.

“I would like to hear your ideas about how we can preserve and enhance the literature traditions today without disappointing a major part of readers. Is it possible for readers to find an interesting book and for writers to find their readers?” the President said.

The President drew attention to the fact that literature has always been the source of ideas and themes for other types of art. The head of state asked how this artistic partnership is developing now. “Writers complain that contemporary composers and directors have turned their back on the national literature. Are their complaints fair? Maybe, the reason for the waning interest is the lack of good books?” the head of state said.
