Volodymyr Dibrova

Volodymyr Dibrova (Володи́мир Дібро́ва, 1951) received the BBC’s "Book of the Year" award for his novel "Andrew's Descent" (Андріївський узвіз). His novel reminds us that the death is not the worst thing that could happen to us. What is tragic is our contemporary’s separation from Christian and folklore traditions. His tragedy is the family without love and friendship without trust as well as the fact that understanding of these values comes only at the end of life.

In these two novellas, Volodymyr Dibrova tells the story of how the Soviet system was sustained by individuals who never truly believed in it, but simply lacked the courage to oppose it.

"The collection by Volodymyr Dibrova "The Retold" consists of eleven chapters. Each of them is a commentary and a variation on themes of famous fairy tales and other literary works. They include examples of folklore and folk narratives, the myth and the duma, a parable for first-graders and a passage from the Bible, and even a modern novel. All these works are presented as retold by the author and are accompanied with a literary commentary, which quickly transforms into memories, and then – into a separate story. This genre makes it possible to combine the national and the individual, the universal and the personal.

Forty-four Ukrainian writers, fifty-five short stories, twenty-five years after Chernobyl. This anthology presents the panorama of the Ukrainian Chernobyl stories. Spirit of classified texts, however not only about the concepts of disaster (Chernobyl nuclear disaster) or catharsis (the present) that editors used as the key to defining the time zone in which the texts were looking for this book.

All those things that we've come to expect and love in Eastern European writing-the social commentary, the ironic viewpoint that can see humor and tragedy simultaneously-are present in "Peltse" and "Pentameron." These two short novels by Volodymyr Dibrova, one of the best prose stylists in Ukraine today, together form an extraordinarily complete view of the lives of the oppressed and their oppressors during Soviet Communism's waning days.

Here you can find video of conference from 11. november 2008. The theme is: The Great Famine in Ukraine.

Pentameron, short novel by Volodymyr Dibrova, presents a day in the life of five office workers who share the onerous task of translating boring foreign texts. Though it is a society different from ours, their personal concerns are hardly unfamiliar. Each character seeks fulfillment. The clownish Vitya yearns to be a painter. Zoyka dreams of a room of her own (leaving the communal dormitories far behind). Antonina suffers anxiety attacks over her ill son and husband. Ophelia considers a passport arrangement that will let her travel to Los Angeles. Svitlana wishes she was less frigid toward her husband. And what blocks them in their attainments? Fear.

Peltse, short novel by Volodymyr Dibrova, presents readers with the creation of an apparatchik. Many technical feats are pulled off in this volume. Whereas "Pentameron" showcases Dibrova's deftness for juggling characters and keeping the story moving, "Peltse" plunges one into the hallucinations of this bureaucrat for almost its entire length. Nightmarish scenes and anonymous faces parade past as one watches Peltse's climb to power, trivial attempts at progress (are rubber pads under railroad tracks the best service to humanity?), rise of rivals, self-loathing and subsequent fall.

Unknown said...

The influences of Samuel Beckett and Eugene Ionesco, both of whom Dibrova has translated, are visible--from the office workers' handling of texts to Peltse's fantastic imaginings. There is enormous compactness of phrasing here, which, as Askold Melnyczuk says in his introduction, shows that a novel is "defined by the distance a writer can travel across a sentence," not by the number of pages.
Is Dibrova also writing as a prisoner? Of course not. But his works, and many others, show that the techniques of literary subterfuge have outlasted the Soviet system. "Peltse" and "Pentameron" are exciting for suggesting where Slavic writers are headed. After all, critics found enough commonalities among Latin American writers like Garcia Marquez and Borges to group them as "magical realists."
Perhaps Dibrova's works are a specimen of the Slavic equivalent. Either way, there is a bounty of lessons here for all writers.

A representative of the so-called ‘lost generation’ of Ukrainian writers, Dibrova began writing poetry and prose in the late 1960s, but was able to publish his works for the first time only in 1986 when one of his poems appeared in the journal Ukraïna.

Unknown said...

In the meantime, in 1978, he began publishing literary translations and later became known for his Ukrainian renditions of the works of Samuel Beckett and Eugene Ionesco (his translation of Beckett’s novel Watt was awarded theMykola Lukash Prize in 1991).

Unknown said...

From 1986 his literary criticism began to be published by Vsesvit and other journals. Between 1987 to 1989 several of his short stories appeared in Moloda hvardiia, and his first two books of prose, Teksty z nazvamy i bez (Texts with and without Titles) and Pisni Bitlz (Beatles Songbook), were published in Kyiv in 1990 and 1991. They were followed by several journal publications of his short stories and novellas and a collectionZbihovys’ka (Get-togethers, 1999), all of which won him the reputation of one of the most respected prose writers of his generation. In 1996, two of his novellas were published in the United States in the English translation as Peltse. Pentameron.

Unknown said...

In 1992 Dibrova began publishing his dramatic works, strongly influenced by the aesthetics of the theater of the absurd, but, at the same time, exhibiting the characteristic features of the Soviet ‘sots-art’ literature of the 1980s. A book of his selected prose and drama that included his popular novel Burdyk (first published in 1997) appeared as Vybhane (Crumpled) in 2002, while his collected plays were published as Dovkola stolu. Piesy (Around the Table. Plays) in 2005. His novel Andriivs’kyi uzviz (St. Andrew’s Way) was awarded the BBC Ukrainian Service Book of the Year Prize in 2007.
