Armen Shekoyan

Armen Shekoyan (1953); Arm.Արմեն Շեկոյան; Rus. Армен Шекоян

source: http://granish.com/armen-shekoyan-poems/
Writer and journalist.
Even in the Soviet era, his poetry was known for the language experimenting techniques and use of a great deal of Yerevan slang (Anti-Poetry, 2000). His book of verses named Hotel Yerevan (2003) represents the Yerevan art scene. His literary activities were an extra income for him, therefore he published his prose works above all in periodicals paying royalties, not in literary reviews. The book The Silk Road” (2004) is a collection of such works. Since 2005, "Aravot" – an Armenian journal, has been publishing his original and detailed autobiography in sequels, under the name The Armenian Time.

The author joined
the writer's initiatives for an Armenian-Azerbaijani rapprochement and published a short prose The Dead” at Mediafairplay.org. It can be found in Armenian, Russian, English and Azeri. (1) A selection of Shekoyan´s poems is available online and translated into English (2).

A poem by Armen Shekoyan called Words

Zuzana Zlochova said...

Writer Vahan Ishkhanyan writes about Armen Shekoyan and his novel "Armenien Time".
The fourth chapter of “Armenian Time” starts with the line: “I have started an autobiographical novel on my own right.” That autobiography becomes the biography of an entire Soviet generation. The main, four segments of the novel’s first volume - youth, student years, the shore and the army - are the characteristic parts of the life of a young man from Yerevan. Read more here.

Small part of his gorgeous production:

This is flesh that surrendered to death.
This is blood that stuttered once, then was silenced forever.
Oh what tragic celebration, what joyful grieving,
and inside our hearts are warping.
We weep, for it’s a wedding,
but the groom, alas, is not with us,
for it’s a wedding,
but the guests are, oh, not worthy.
And we laugh,
for even though the seedling perished,
it will be fecund.
He took our ailments, he took our pain,
this Son of Man,
he cured us from death. But with man’s kiss
he was infected with death.

Poem: Love (translated to english by Shushan Avagyan).

POET AND CITIZEN

Those who had been once in here
Could witness I’ve been here as well,
That I’d been here and over there,
That I’m a dervish slow and frail.
A crazy nomad, foul and lazy,
Wandering always down and up,
Being ready every moment
Getting lost from very path.

***
We have deepened until bottom,
till the ground of this life,
but the outcome is uncertain
of all efforts we have done.
We are digging deep in abyss
of this baseless, endless mine,
still unknowing the very essence
of this life: both yours and mine.

ALL PEOPLE ARE EQUAL BUT SOME
OF THEM ARE MORE THAN EQUAL

I lived so long on this terrain
For unique reason just to say,
How much alike are all the people
Living in this Stratosphere:

All Balkan people, Serbs and Moslems,
Montenegrins and Croats,
Turks and Russians, Jews and Arabs,
People close and far apart.
Even people outside Europe,
Indigenous and Nomadic,
White and Negros, Red and Zebras,
Fighting kinfolk of Kashmir.
Celts and Normans, Czechs and Slovaks,
Franco-Galls and Normandy’s,
Indo-Germans, Nazi-Aryans,
Anglo-Saxons and Chinese.
People both sides of Atlantics,
Dwelling in this Stratosphere:
DOLLAR-prayers, EURO-peanuts,
Man and woman, lesb’s and gays.
