Uladzimir Niakliaeu

Uladzimir Niakliaeu (1946)Belarusian: Уладзімір Някляеў.
Poet, prose writer, politician. Holder of several state awards and literary awards. (1)
His poems are socially engaged to a large extent, but they do not lack lyrism and irony. In the recent years, he has released collections of poems: "Kon" (Кон,2010) and "Letters to Freedom" (Лісты да волі, 2011). The latter was written after Niakliaeu had spent over a month in jail after the presidential elections in 2010, in which he participated as one of the candidates.

At the same time, Niakliaeu is the author of two novels. A "Romance", as he himself called it, "Party Musician" (Лабух, 2003) is a story about a representant of the "creative class", the character that finds himself in a situation of choosing new life paths. The novel is characterized by a significant role of eroticism and is at the same time particularly politicized. The novel "Plain and Sirup Soda Machine" (Аўтамат з газіроўкай з сіропам і без, 2012) is an autobiographical work about Minsk in the 1960’s, life of the then teenagers and processes of self-identification formation in the period of the Khrushchev’s Thaw. For this novel, the author received the most important alternative literary prize in Belarus – Giedroyc Prize. Niakliaeu has also written several song lyrics.

Uladzimir Niakliaeu is one of the most prominent contemporary Belarusian writers, as well as a social and political activist. Although he wrote his first poetry in Russian, he later chose to write his native Belarusian. The former president of Belarusian PEN, he was also an opposition candidate for president in 2010, when he was jailed for his political activity. He was released the following year and remains under house arrest Uladzimir Niakliaeu, the leader of Tell the Truth civil campaign and former presidential candidate, spoke to charter97.org about his release. “I don't have any impressions of what didn't take place. People were executed without investigations and trial in the 1930s. Now they are released without trials. I don't feel much happier after the release. It was a sign for me, all opposition groups and all opponents of the regime." source : http://charter97.org/en/news/2013/7/25/72826/ ,

“It can be seen in the reaction of independent media and also in the reaction of people. Together, it gives an opportunity for spontaneous protests against the fake elections and foreign military bases. And also against the policy of the authorities that led the country to its full dependence on Russia, though Lukashenka is now trying to become dependent on the West,”

The latest actions by the Russian Federation show more and more evidently that Russia is going to turn Belarus not just in its colony, which it is about to do due to the current policy of the Belarusian regime, but also in its military base. It violates the constitution of the Republic of Belarus, which says that Belarus is a neutral state. It poses a real threat to the country's independence and the future of Belarusians,”

“I propose that all prospective candidate withdraw and all opposition forces support political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich as a single candidate of the democratic opposition before the start of the registration of initiative groups. This is the only reasonable decision both politically and morally. This decision can save the opposition,” Uladzimir Niakliaeu writes.

Uladzimir Niakliaeu and his reaction: Russia wants to turn Belarus into military base

“Our land and people have had enough wars, losses and blood. It was the life of our grandparents and parents, and we cannot allow it to be repeated for our children,” the statement reads. “All attempts to set up foreign military bases in Belarus and create a lodgement for a war must be regarded as acts of aggression against the Republic of Belarus. We will use every means to resist it.”
