Since 1991, the dogmatic schemes of the Ukrainian literature development
within precisely determined ideological limits of the Socialist realism, valid
until that time, have ceised to be in force and been replaced by
an intensive search for new aesthetic methods of reality
displaying, genre forms, appearance of various literary tendencies. All that
has been taking place within complicated political and social contexts of the
post-collonial syndrome and its overcoming, rise
of freedom of the author's individuality, becoming aware of the
author's "self" as a part of the Ukrainian nation and its newborn
culture. Among the most significant features of the current literary processes
in Ukraine, the change of a long-term civilization and cultural orientation,
resulting in the decrease of an
until-very-recently strong influence of Russian literature plays a
very important role, while the Western literatures continue to be in the
spotlight of the readers' attention. New type of a reader is present – he is no
longer satisfied with the Socialist-realism stylistics, nor with a narrow
national, folk focus, while the influence of internet technologies on
the literary processes is constantly growing.
The most noticeable tendencies in the contemporary Ukrainian literature
include the return to large prosaic forms, departure from the
extreme postmodernism and a significant decentralization of the ongoing
processes within culture and literature. An especially positive tendency to be
mentioned is a return to the long-term taboo topics, search for new language
and stylistic methods, expansion of new genres and a deep, broad reflection of
the contemporary social issues and the historical memory. What is noticeable in
the today's complicated situation is a constantly growing political (mostly
pro-Western and democratic) engagement of the majority of Ukrainian writers.

«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 600 of 848 Newer› Newest»I have already written about ukrainian science fiction writers who predicted the russian invasion. I have mentioned only two of them - Fedor Berezin and Andrei Valentinov. Obviously, trere are more authors of books with similar storylines, including Gleb Bobrov’s The Age of the Stillborn or Grigory Savitsky’s Battlefield Ukraine: The Broken Trident. The trend has been so overwhelming that Dmitri Bykov, a Russian commentator, has dubbed the Ukraine conflict “the writers’ war.” (Here´s his full article in Russian.)

Autumn
by: С.І.М.ка
Not captivating autumn,
Wrapped in cool days,
And their transience flowing through his bored fingers,
A heart is begging
Great little award,
When the autumn in heart - bases his strong shoulder.
Straightforward vision of Russian good vs. Western evil is offered in The Age of the Stillborn by Gleb Bobrov, who as well as Berezin, is an ethnic Russian from Eastern Ukraine (Luhansk) and an Afghanistan war veteran. The apocalyptic novel, set in a near future in which a brutal Kiev regime seeks to quash rebellion in the East with NATO help, was first published online in 2006 and became a hit on the Russian Internet before going to print in 2007.
Donetsk citizen Grigory Savitsky made his literary debut in 2009 with Battlefield Ukraine: The Broken Trident, which depicts a scenario uncannily similar to Berezin’s saga, right down to 2010 as the start of the war. The back cover summary refers to “ ‘Orange’ Nazis” who provoke a civil war in Ukraine and unleash genocide against the Russian-speaking population, “wiping entire cities off the face of the earth”—aided by NATO “peacekeeping” troops and American air power.

Angel In The Chest
by Вікторія Єсеніна
The whole day passed in one breath,
In the evening I began to choke.
Unfortunately you believe the holy idol,
From faith that you do not want to hide.
I cry tears of the Holy Mother,
For the same silver cross hiding on a chest.
I do not see true living,
The whole world around me stopped.
Today I have an angel in the chest,
One wisdom told me -
"Not only once you will be disappointed in people,
The main thing is to cherish prayer of the soul. "
Literary against emptiness
In Lviv, Ukraine, I visited the Book Fair Publishers' Forum, which is associated with the festival Book forum and is regarded as the largest in Central Europe. Event lived across town, events were held in dozens of towns and squares reign stands with publishers.
For days I have encountered in the center of an incredible number of people with books in full bags with the logo of the festival of literature it was mentioned in almost every company. The readings and discussions was a huge interest. Full hall you could take for example, Ivan Štrpka. The final overnight reading dozens of writers in the theater was hopelessly sold out 300 places, people thronged the stairs in the aisles and on congested corridors waiting for the opportunity when it released some place.

Dear_______,
The land's rusty again.
Acid rain: our blackened cucumber wines
Jut from the earth like scorched wire.
And I'm not sure about the orchard this year.
It nees a good cleaning up,
But I'm scared of those trees. When I walk
Among them, it feels like I'm going to step
On some carcass rotting in the tall grass,
Something crawling with worms, something smiling
Sickly in the hot sun.
And I get nervous over the sounds:
The day before yesterday, in the thicket, meowing,
The monotonous creaking of a tree,
The suppressed cackling of geese - all constantly
Straining for the same note. Do you remember
The dry elm, the one lightning turned
Into a giant charred bone last summer?

Gregory Semenchuk: "Every poet - selfish, and his art - own form of psychotherapy"

- How "Inside Jihad" is different from the book "Trip", with which it all began?
There is completely changed structure from four sections to remaining two - "Time" and "Location".
- How do you understand the concept of jihad?
In addition to this holy war against infidels in Islam, it is also a fight against their own vices. My head, character, soul, have many problems, fears, internal Titans, that must be destroyed - that’s what I am actually engaged in through literature.
- Selfish ...
It has been proved for the long time, that all this complexes of the author are treated by writings of the author, and sometimes even mental problems.

AT NIGHT
by Warrior-Princess
At night, it seems as if everything freezes
Those courts are full of bustle,
Hot summer season
As if it were not end of her edge.
At night, there begins an hour of paradise.
You walk the road and silence hugs (you),
Surely melodious voices are heard
Natural and pure beauty,
Fortunately for me there is not my best.
Looking at heaven, it brings peace.
Here you are standing in the sea looking at stars
And unusual, and truly living
Like a fairy tale in reality traveling.
Here I want to stay until the daylight
And hide with kisses for a moment
The one, whose heart burning in flames
From feeling called love ...

IN LOVE

Are we in love? But is this always necessary
All of us need love ...
We love, let us love
This is - correct, there is a lot of time

What is more beautiful than our love
Not only from the evening till the morning
Love - is a gift of nature
So we all can drink this nectar ...
without you ...

Why did you leave your sky
I am still in it, as before sinking
How would you know, how painful it is without you
And how every night I silently cry.
And what to do, when the sun become cold?
Why did that came alive in my heart?
Sorry ... I think that without you
I no longer believe in good.

Why do you write?
I just like to.
Do you already earn money for your means of living?
Sometimes there are decent fees for publications and speeches. This, of course, is just a nice bonus, but also my basic earnings usually were and are somehow related to literature.
What should be the ideal book like?
The ideal book have to be round, like an ideal Renaissance city plan, must be filled only with virtues of characters and contain basically no conflict.
Describe what kind of writer you will become, when you grow up.
Until I grow up, I will read through family memories from tree characters, visit several countries, and when I grow up, I will write a kind of "family chronicle", the life story of my great-grandfather, his training in Zhitomir and Kiev, the war, teaching and his death a year before my birth.

Glance at the emerging Ukrainian women prose writers by Michael M. Naydan
“All in all, I see two general trends in the phenomenon of emerging women writers in Ukraine. One comprises urban writing, which is a backlash against previous Soviet colonialism and stereotyping. These writers seem to need to express their cosmopolitanism, to be a part of the larger culture and cultural trends of the world and, at the extreme end, to be chic and cutting-edge with no holds barred. They, of course, tackle real issues and challenges presented by today’s modern society and women’s place in it. The other trend is toward a new, retrospective rural prose tradition, a return to one’s roots in village life in both the recent and distant past. These women writers (particularly Matios, Malyarchuk and Dashvar) revel in the past and its lessons, though they, too, at times also deal with urban characters in urban settings. It will be interesting to see if some of the younger women urban writers continue on the same track or shift into a different modality.”

Olha Yulianivna Kobylianska (Ukrainian: Ольга Кобилянська) was an Ukrainian modernist writer and feminist. Her writings were influenced by George Sand and Friedrich Nietzsche. Kobylianska was interested in the Ukrainian peasantry, and often wrote about the lives of these people. She depicted the struggle between good and evil and the mystical force of nature, predestination, magic, and the irrational in many of her stories of peasant life. Her works are known for their impressionistic, lyrical descriptions of nature and subtle psychological portrayals.
Kobylianska's works have been published in many editions and selections. In 1944 a literary memorial museum dedicated to her was opened in Chernivtsi, in the building in which she lived from 1938-1942.

Ukrainian literature had a difficult development because, due to constant foreign domination over Ukrainian territories, there was often a significant difference between the spoken and written language. At times the use of the Ukrainian language was even partly prohibited to be printed. However, foreign rule by Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Turkey, left behind new words thereby enriching Ukrainian. Despite tsarist and soviet repression, Ukrainian authors were able to produce a rich literary heritage. source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_literature
Due to the increased freedom and openness of the Ukrainian society to foreign influences and much broader contacts with literatures of other countries contemporary Ukrainian literature is different from the literature of soviet and classical period. It turns to the previously forbidden topics (Holodomor, sexuality, drugs, deviant behavior, etc.), using new styles (postmodernism, neo avant-garde, profanity and surzhyk), diversity and mixing of genres, shocking effects and reflecting upon social problems and historical memory.
Modern Ukraine also has a significant number of Russophone writers, who are especially successful in the genres of science fiction and fantasy
Some Ukrainian authors write in a mixture of Ukrainian and Russian called surzhyk . Dibrova along with Bohdan Zholdak, Les Poderevyansky were using it to create a comic effect as this is the language of the marginalized. These three authors also belonged to Kyiv ironic school. They are considered to be the forefathers of Ukrainian postmodernism

In lot of countries, one person from culture circles is something like a synonymous for whole nation. For Ukrainians is that person Taras Hryhorovich Schevchenko. He was a consummate poet, artist and activist who, for many, defined modern Ukrainian literature, and even the modern written language itself. His books have already been published in 300 editions, but these masterpieces have never ever been translated into English. Last year has it changed. Schevchenko is now translated into English.
Yuri Vynnychuk visited Czech republic within the Month of author´s reading 2015. Interesting about this author is , that he can read every Slavic language. Even in this video he speaks Czech. Video
Taras Prokhasko was a participant of International Summer Theatre Laboratory "Hero – image - dramaturgy”, where he gave a lectures of being a hero in literature and social life.
I put it in here because I would welcome something like this "laboratory" here in Slovakia. It can be really amazing to share "expiereiences with really interesting people.

Oksana Stefanivna Zabuzhko(Окса́на Стефа́нівна Забу́жко) (born 19 September 1960) is a contemporary Ukrainian poet, writer and essayist. Zabuzhko studied philosophy at the Kiev University, where she also obtained her doctorate in aesthetics in 1987. She won a Fulbright scholarship in 1994 and taught Ukrainian literature at Harvard and University of Pittsburgh.
Zabuzhko is known both for her literary works and criticism. Her controversial bestselling novel Field Work in Ukrainian Sex was translated in eight languages. In her writing Zabuzhko draws a lot of attention to the questions of Ukrainian self-identification, post-colonial issues and feminism. Her book Let My People Go won the Korrespondent magazine Best Ukrainian documentary book award in June 2006.
Famous Ukrainian writer Oksana Zabuzhko has won a prestigious Central European literary award Angelus for her 2009 novel Muzei Pokynutykh Sekretiv (The Museum of Abandoned Secrets). The novel has already been translated in a few European languages, some labelled it the literary event of the year, and select critics compared the work with those of Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Thomas Mann.
The Museum of Abandoned Secrets is a story of journalist Daryna Hoshchynska investigating a series of historical events taking place on the territory of western Ukraine between 1940s and 2004. The story shows the lives, love, passions, and pain of three generations, reflecting the history of modern Ukraine.
The novel entitled Poliovi Doslidzennia z Ukrayinskoho Seksu (Field Work in Ukrainian Sex) made Zabuzhko the most read Ukrainian-language writer. It was reprinted 10 times and translated in 11 languages. The book is considered the first feminist literary work in modern Ukrainian literature. It explores feminine identity, as well as Ukrainian identity as a whole. Zabuzhko, 53, writes prose, poetry, philosophy works, and articles. Her literary style is often defined as postmodern.
Angelus is a literary award, established in 2006. Its hometown Wroclaw hosts the annual award ceremony, in which a writer from one of the 21 eligible for the award Central and Eastern European countries gets the Angelus statuette and the money prize (PLN 150,000 [nearly USD 50,000 – ed.] in 2013). Previously, only one Ukrainian writer received an Angelus award – Yuri Andrukhovych (in 2006).
“We decided to give this award for the book that weaves into one history and modernity, the book that features magic, love, betrayal, and death,” commented the 2013 winner Natalia Gorbaniewska, head of the Angelus jury. “I’m speechless. Now I know why Hollywood stars cry when they get an Oscar,” said Zabuzhko in her acceptance speech before thanking colleague Katarzyna Kotyńska, who translated the book into Polish.
Lugansk - published in 2010 by publishing house Folio (Kharkiv). The novel won the Book of the Year by BBC competition in 2010, and in 2014 the novel was awarded by the Jan Michalski Swiss literary prize. The author of the book is Sergey Zhadan. In addition to Ukrainian language, a novel is published in Russian, Polish, German and French languages. More resources at this site.

Ukrainian literature in the UK
This article covers the creation of fictional literature in Ukrainian by writers in the United Kingdom, as well as literary output of Ukrainians in other languages, the translation of Ukrainian literary works into other languages and the study of Ukrainian literature in the UK.
Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky recently appeared at the Guardian site on the list of top 10 wartime love stories, what is another big accomplishment for the Ukrainian literature.
The Ukrainian writer Maria Matios is the winner of the “Book of the Year 2004” and of the Taras Shevchenko National Award in 2005 (for her novel “Sweet Darusia”). The author of 12 volumes of poetry and prose is considered to be the most productive modern Ukrainian writer. Her most widely known works include: “Sweet Darusia” (2003-2005), “Nation” (2002-2003) and “The Short Life” (2001). Matios bases her books on her family history that has been preserved by the family through the centuries and goes back to 1790.
The 1st International Literary Festival has ended in Odesa
The idea of the festival originated before the Euromaidan events during a conversation in Iasi (Romania) between Kyiv novelist Andrey Kurkov and organizers of cultural events Ulrich Schreiber from Berlin and Hans Ruprecht from Bern. They chose Odesa as the venue for historical, ethnic, and geopolitical reasons.
Quite interesting article about ukrainian literature, writers. You may find out that writers you consider Russians, are actually Ukrainians.

anticipates autumn
My gardens, as birds,
And do not fly in clamor,
For heaven not to reach.
Resets layer by layer
Emerald-garment,
To quickly will be new
Their snow coat.
And look at the sky,
And the canopy flap
His feathered friends
With a clamor of departing.
Kiss

Look, how clouds kiss
Look, how the flowers kiss.
Can you hear, how the magic whistles
Hundred-voiced gentle breeze?
Already night and scattered across the sky
Stars kissing.
And kiss my hungry lips,
Passionate, enthusiastic, heady.

Again nonsense
Again crack
Weave scary stories
When I'm with you – I´m feeling the sky
Now without you – I go to the madhouse
Again weave stories
Again and again without you I can not
Spin-thought
What if I can
You can also
Again, you're my autumn
In red leaves
In cold hands
I dry for you
I'm mad for you

Rainy night -
Marathon experienced.
Whether runing or going so fast?
Although there is no light anywhere,
Steps sure, balanced.
Probably, studying the given distance-
By the autumn fields of his journey.
There Grain fanatics zhdut
And prepare green ovation.
No need…

Do not need pain and regret -
It is not necessary ...
Standing on the edge of the abyss ...
You - above the sky.
Lifting up eyes in blue ...
And you - down
Throwing in view of this moment
From his throne.
Do not need pain, complaints,
For this, as scaffold ...
Be free, a man of suffering -
Take off, like a bird!

For his literary writings and activity as a public intellectual, Andrukhovych has been awarded multiple times, he has obtained numerous national and international prizes

As with most European countries, Ukraine has a well established literary community. In the past many stories where likely passed on by word of mouth until they were eventually committed to written form. As a result, many old Ukrainian fables and stories abound in printed Ukrainian literature today. Besides this, the 20th century has seen the emergence of several well-liked writers and poets and their works have become popular. Those viewed by the Ukrainian public as truly great writers have become literary icons amongst their own people and in many ways, their works have become symbolic of literature in Ukraine.
Ukrainian literature is essentially classified into four main groups – fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and children’s stories. The most popular categories are fiction, poetry and children’s stories, and there are many works that have become household favorites across the country. The children's stories of Pan Kotskyi, the "Crippled Duckling" and the "Mitten", are sometimes heard in other countries across the globe where they have been translated and enjoyed by other children. A very popular Ukrainian fiction writer is Alexander Ivakhnenko who wrote "Dobrozychlyvist" – a well-liked literary work in Ukraine.
Poetry is a very popular form of Ukrainian literature and a number of poets have received widespread popularity in the country. Poets like Tara Shevchenko, Viktor Neborak, Ivan Drach, Olena Teliha, Natalka Bilotserkivets, Mykola Vinhranovsky, Iu. Andrykhovych, Volodymyr Fedynyshynets and Hryhorvj Chubaj are well published and distributed across the country. Poetry is enjoyed as an excellent medium of heartfelt expression and many Ukrainians dabble in the art of creating poetry, though they may never publish their works. To many Ukrainians, literature is a form of entertainment, expression and a lifetime passion.

Her most widely known works include: “Sweet Darusia” (2003-2005), “Nation” (2002-2003) and “The Short Life” (2001). Matios bases her books on her family history that has been preserved by the family through the centuries and goes back to 1790

Several outstanding Ukrainian writers were nominated for the Nobel prize but died before any decision regarding the nomination was made. In 1915 an Austrian professor nominated one of the top Ukrainian artists of all time Ivan Franko for the award. In 1985 Nobel Laureate from Germany Heinrich Böll nominated a representative of Ukrainian dissident movement Vasyl Stus for the prize.
Other Ukrainian writers nominated for the Nobel Prize include Mykola Bazhan, Oles Honchar, Ulas Samchuk, and Pavlo Tychyna. Interestingly, Mykola Bazhan refused his nomination in 1970 politely explaining his choice in a letter – although he appreciated the effort to draw international attention to the blossoming Ukrainian literature he reckoned his art unworthy of such an honor as the Nobel Prize. source : http://wnu-ukraine.com/

It was also very useful to get new contacts, to arrange visits of Slovak and Polish writers to the Lviv International Literary Festival (what is highly important for our main territorial focus of the festival – Danube Lounge). Why do you write?
Perhaps, letters - one of the few areas of my work, which I do not ask myself, "Why?"
Is it easy to be a writer in Ukraine?
Easy to say, in the psychological sense? As long as you do not write the social, patriotic, Ukrainian centred lyrics, and while it does not extend beyond your narrow circle - yes. In this plan.
