Ukrainian Literature

Since 1991, the dogmatic schemes of the Ukrainian literature development within precisely determined ideological limits of the Socialist realism, valid until that time, have ceised to be in force and been replaced by an intensive search for new aesthetic methods of reality displaying, genre forms, appearance of various literary tendencies. All that has been taking place within complicated political and social contexts of the post-collonial syndrome and its overcoming, rise of freedom of the author's individuality, becoming aware of the author's "self" as a part of the Ukrainian nation and its newborn culture. Among the most significant features of the current literary processes in Ukraine, the change of a long-term civilization and cultural orientation, resulting in the decrease of an until-very-recently strong influence of Russian literature plays a very important role, while the Western literatures continue to be in the spotlight of the readers' attention. New type of a reader is present – he is no longer satisfied with the Socialist-realism stylistics, nor with a narrow national, folk focus, while the influence of internet technologies on the literary processes is constantly growing.
The most noticeable tendencies in the contemporary Ukrainian literature include the return to large prosaic forms, departure from the extreme postmodernism and a significant decentralization of the ongoing processes within culture and literature. An especially positive tendency to be mentioned is a return to the long-term taboo topics, search for new language and stylistic methods, expansion of new genres and a deep, broad reflection of the contemporary social issues and the historical memory. What is noticeable in the today's complicated situation is a constantly growing political (mostly pro-Western and democratic) engagement of the majority of Ukrainian writers.

Vladimir Arenev (vlastným menom Vladimir Konstantinovič Puzij /Володимир Костянтинович Пузій/) pôsobí ako žurnalista, prekladateľ, editor a autor. Svojou tvorbou sa venuje oblasti fantastiky a vedecko-fantastickej literatúry.Doteraz vydal 17 kníh napísaných v ukrajinčine a ruštine.

Arenevove poviedky a novely boli publikované v mnohých úspešných sci-fi / fantasy antológiách, informácie v linku nižšie.

Taras Shevchenko's writings formed the foundation for the modern Ukrainian literature to a degree that he is also considered the founder of the modern written Ukrainian language. Shevchenko's poetry contributed greatly to the growth of Ukrainian national consciousness, and his influence on various facets of Ukrainian intellectual, literary, and national life is still felt to this day. Influenced by Romanticism, Shevchenko managed to find his own manner of poetic expression that encompassed themes and ideas germane to Ukraine and his personal vision of its past and future.

Vladimir Vasilyev, o ktorom som písala vyššie, je mimo Ukrajiny a Rusko známy najmä svojou spoluprácou so svetoznámym ruským autorom sci-fi Sergejom Lukjanenkom v jeho "Svete Hliadok" (Мир Дозоров). Spolupracoval s ním na románe "Denná hliadka" (Дневной дозор) a samostatne napísal ďalšie dve knihy z tohto univerza: Black Palmira's Face (Лик Черной Пальмиры), 2003, Time of Inversions (Время инверсий), 2012, ktoré pokiaľ viem ešte neboli preložené do slovenčiny ani češtiny.

Zaujímavým literátnym počinom Vladimira Vasilyeva je cyklus Большой Киев (Veľký Kiev), je to technologická fantasy, kde si stroje vyvinuli vlastné vedomie podobné zvieraciemu. V tomto svete v Kieve, spolu žijú okrem ľudskej aj rôzne iné rasy, elfovia, rôzne divé a domestifikované vozidlá. Druhý diel, 10 dielny poviedkový cyklus, je inšpirovaný prácou poľského autora fantastiky Andrzej Sapkowkseho a nazýva sa

I found an article about Serhiy Zhadan. There are the ideas that interested me:

“Cuts on the head, eyebrow dissected, concussion, broken nose suspected.” - he describes his injuries during protesting against Viktor Yanukovych. One of the occupiers was Zhadan, who lives in Kharkiv. As the attackers were hitting him, the writer said, they told him to kneel and kiss the Russian flag. “I told them to go f*ck themselves,” Zhadan wrote, on his Facebook page.
“Americans need to understand, in Eastern Europe, writers still have a huge influence on society,” Vitaly Chernetsky, a professor of Slavic literature at the University of Kansas, said of Zhadan’s role in current events.

Found an interesting site where you can read some text from Ukrainian literature. http://sites.utoronto.ca/elul/Main-Eng.html

It's supposed to be "Electronic Library of Ukrainian Literature" with purpose to provide texts to all readers, though particularly to students outside Ukraine, who have difficulty obtaining them.

Poetry has mostly been regarded as something for literature connoisseurs. But it's always been a different story in Eastern Europe. There, people celebrate their poets like pop stars.
"I'm a pop star here," said 26-year old poet Max Czollek. The young man from Berlin spent two months in the town on an international scholarship for poets.
"Poetry is something that's much more celebrated here. The audience is quite young."

The Shifting Object of Desire: The Poetry of Oleksandr Irvanets
Oleksandr Irvanets produced some of his best known works shortly after Ukraine's declaration of independence in 1991. The writer's irreverent, ironic, and humorous reworking of the Ukrainian self-image is analyzed. Using the writings of Slavoj Žižek and Jacques Lacan, the author argues that the poems surprise the reader by dislocating the object of desire from its expected, “traditional,” place, and relocating it in another, wholly unexpected, one. In this way Irvanets reveals existing fantasy structures both in the patriotic poem and in the Soviet cliché. He questions their validity and suggests the need for a new sense of identity.

Mr. Irvanets' novel, "Rivne/Rovno," is without doubt his most important prose work. Its locus is the author's native city of Rivne, located in western Ukraine; its hero is a young writer named Shloima Etsirvan (a scrambled version of the author's surname). Thus, the novel is definitely an autobiographical work. It contains explicit references to several persons living today; it provides realistic depictions of a topographical nature and current events. In short, it is informed by a contemporary Zeitgeist. However, Mr. Irvanets' realism is mitigated and augmented by the author's rampant imagination, which transports the work into the realm of surrealism placing it into the anti-utopian genre.

Famous Ukrainian poet Oleksandr Irvanets dedicated a poem to the heroic Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko.

Nadiya was a volunteer in Ukrainian volunteer battalion “Aidar”. She was captured by the separatists and has now been illegally taken to Russia. In this poem Oleksandr admires the heroism of a brave woman. Her name, Nadiya means hope in Ukrainian.

I bite my lip from helplessness,
It simply doesn’t make sense.
How enemies captured our Hope,
And left us all in suspense.
She is proud and beautiful,
Looking down on them.
And you feel angry from helplessness,
Because you are still a man.
You can freeze and starve,
Barely living in broken cities,
But we can’t give up our Hope,
Not without a fight that is.

Môj preklad:
Hryziem si pery od beznádeje,
proste to nedáva zmysel,
ako sa nepriatelia zmocnili našej nádeje,
a nechali nás v napätí.

Je hrdá a krásna,
pozerajúc sa dole na nich
a cítiš sa bezmocne,
lebo si len človek.

Môžeš zmrznúť a hladovať,
ledva prežívajúc v upadajúcich mestách,
ale nemôžme sa vzdať našej nádeje,
nie bez žiadneho boja.

Ukraina. Spisovateľ a vojna

Letters from Ukraine - it is a very interesting article about current events in Ukraine, including also several poems by Ukrainian poets. You can find there the poem by Ukrainian poet Natalka Bilotserkivets, about fear, about knowing how “every day is your last chance” because:

at three in the morning, God like Bosch will come
to Hotel Central
with insects playing clarinets
with mosquitoes drinking submissive blood
with frogs and snails;
with fish, too; and all your love
is just caviar in the repositories of hell

…and every day is your last chance
and each night as though for the last time
and over the lily-flowered canals the bicycles
of anxious schoolgirls fly

Slovak literature actively develops, new names appear, the popularity of female subjects rises, a lot of literary events and new festivals take place, literary life in the Slovak capital and in smaller cities of the country is in full swing. There sincere interest in literary processes in Ukraine, the development of book publishing, translation activity, relations between Ukraine and Slovakia are notable. The attention is also paid to the political processes in Ukraine and the hope for fast returning to a stable life. Special expectations are associated with strengthening contacts between literary environments of Ukraine and Slovakia and further fruitful cooperation in the cultural sphere that will be useful for both countries.

In these terms the internship of Oleksandra Kovalchuk, translator from Slovak into Ukrainian, in Literature Information Centre, Bratislava, that lasted from June 08 to June 18, 2014, was very useful. The next meeting of the Ukrainian Literary Club will take place on Saturday, November 15th, 11.00AM at the Ukrainian Institute, London. They will discuss the Ukrainian classic book Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors and also Intermezzo, by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky.
Something about Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky (1864 – 1913)
Kotsiubynsky is a Ukrainian author whose writings described typical Ukrainian life at the start of the 20th century. The popularity of his novels later led to some of them being made into Soviet movies.
Kotsiubynsky’s early stories were described as examples of ethnographic realism; in the years to come, with his style of writing becoming more and more sophisticated, he evolved into one of the most talented Ukrainian impressionist and modernist writers.

On March 8th 2014 took to the streets to commemorate Taras Shevchenko’s 200th birthday. Shevchenko is a 19th-century poet considered one of the fathers of modern Ukrainian literature. “His Ukrainian poetry, his Ukrainian language became the basis for Ukrainian literary language,” said Andrey Kurkov, a Ukrainian writer who lives in Kiev. He is also, according to Kurkov, a symbol of the Ukrainian uprising and independent statehood from Russia. “In today’s situation with Russia occupying Crimea," said Kurkov, "the poems of Shevchenko get the old meaning that Moscow is trying to dominate and to control the destiny of Ukraine."

Viktor Neborak, a tall imposing figure with a booming voice that makes a microphone come to life when he performs his poetry, was born in 1961 and is one of the leading representatives of the mid-to-late 1980s cultural revival in Ukraine. He is best known as a poet and founding member (along with Yuri Andrukhovych and Oleksander Irvanets) of the Bu-Ba-Bu literary performance group that gained enormous popularity in the late 1980s and 1990s in Ukraine. The syllables of the group's name stand for burlesque (burlesk), a puppet show or farce (balahan), and buffoonery (bufonada). Neborak has also been active as a prose writer, translator, essayist, and cultural activist, as well as a performer with the rock band Neborok, which was extremely popular in Western Ukraine and Poland.

In February, among the riots in the streets of Kyiv and general unrest in the country, the regime of Viktor Yanukovitch – then still a President, now a wanted criminal – has done three notable steps in recognition of the significance of Ukrainian poetry in the affairs of the nation. The first step was to arrest a hapless young poet together with his two friends and imprison them under alleged incrimination of “organizing mass riots”. The second step was to shoot the Secretary of the National Writers’ Union in the head: thankfully, with a rubber bullet. Finally, in Kharkiv one of the best known Ukrainian poets had his face beaten into a bloody pulp, because he refused to kneel (literally, not metaphorically) to the government-hired bandits. In light of these accidents I could not help giving in to the urge of briefing the global community on the present state of literary affairs in the country, where the art of writing seems to be given so much weight. -written by Iryna Shuvalova, Ukrainian poet and translator.

Ivan Bahrjanyj (1907 - 1963) narodený v Novom Ulme bol ukrajinský spisovatel,
publicista, politik, jeden zo zakladatelov básnickej skupiny MUR, zakladatel Ukrajinskej
revolučnej demokratickej strany (URDP). Mezi jeho najvýznamnejšie tituly patria
romány "Lovci tygrov" (1946) a "Záhrada Getsemanská" (1950).

a individuálnu slobodu.

vypáčiť priznanie vlastnej viny a donuútitť svedčiť proti svojim najbližším.

Postmoderna v ukrajinskej literatúre:
Ukrajinská literatúra v posledných 20tich rokoch 20. storočia sa mení – odumiera jej ideologická funkcia. V 60. rokoch, keď sa v literatúre presadzujú (non)konformní autori (D. Pavlyčko, L. Kostenko, I . Drač, J . Hucalo, V . Ševčuk) a tzv. Kyjevská škola (V . Holoboroďko, M. Vorobjov, V. Kordun, M. Hryhoriv), nastáva opätovné sprísnenie režimu a nové stupňovanie ideologického tlaku na celú sféru kultúry. Generácie tvorcov 70. a 80. rokov preto unikajú od zobrazovania skutočnosti k hermetizmu, iracionálnemu snovému videniu, halucinácií, experimentu, podvedomiu, silne štylizovanému prejavu, fantázii a magickosti. Rozvíja sa chimerický román (H. Pahaťuková, V. Nazarenko, O. Lyšeha), ktorý narúša tradičné postupy časopriestorovej kontinuity a logiky výpovede. ref:http://www.litcentrum.sk/27615

Unknown said...

S autormi publikujúcimi v 70. a 80. rokoch vstupuje do ukrajinskej literatúry postmodernizmus. Založil ho roku 1985 v Ľvove Jurko Andruchovyč s Viktorom Neborakom a Oleksandrom Irvancom.

Unknown said...

Román Perverzita (1995) završuje trilógiu materializáciou všetkých masiek supermanstva bubabizmu (milenca, bohéma, koloniálneho subjektu a superhrdinu), s priznaním porážky toho posledného.

EuroCon is an annual science fiction convention held in Europe. The organising committee of each Eurocon is selected by vote of the participants of the previous event. The procedure is coordinated by the European Science Fiction Society. The first Eurocon was held in Trieste, Italy, in 1972.
In year 2006 it was held in Kyiv and it was a great step, honor and success, because Ukraine was not just the first country of the former Soviet Union to host this event but Ukrainian authors took both "best authors" places.

Best Author: Henri Lion Oldie (Ukraine)

Star Bridge

Звёздный мост is an annual festival of science-fiction writers in held since 1999 in Kharkov in mid-September. The festival is one of the most popular in the fiction convention, his conduct is widely covered by Ukrainian and Russian media.
Festival in 1999 was preceded by a 10-year part of the future committee members in the city fanclub of science fiction "Contact". The festival always carried itself in friendly athmosphere but in 2012 it had to be closed because of political strife of the main sponsor and mayor of Kharkov. Referring to the difficult political situation, festival refused all the sponsors and was left without premises, building and cash.
Nowadays it's very questionable whether the festival will or won't survive.

Olha Yulianivna Kobylianska (Ukrainian: Ольга Кобилянська) was an Ukrainian modernist writer and feminist. Her writings were influenced by George Sand and Friedrich Nietzsche. Kobylianska was interested in the Ukrainian peasantry, and often wrote about the lives of these people. She depicted the struggle between good and evil and the mystical force of nature, predestination, magic, and the irrational in many of her stories of peasant life. Her works are known for their impressionistic, lyrical descriptions of nature and subtle psychological portrayals.[4]
Kobylianska's works have been published in many editions and selections. In 1944 a literary memorial museum dedicated to her was opened in Chernivtsi, in the building in which she lived from 1938-1942.

Druhá autorova prozaická kniha nesie názov «Спати з жінками» (Spať s ženami). Kniha bola vydaná tento rok.
Autor o knihe : "Je to kniha esejí a úvah o našej existencii a o nás samých, o našom vnútornom kresťanstve a pohanstve.

Is love energy, or is it matter? Is love a right, or a privilege? Is love a connection between souls, or is it just a cocktail of hormones? Will I cease to love when my dopamine, oxitocine, serotonine and adrenaline levels are down?
...
Is dying for the Motherland a manifestation of love? Is living in the Motherland a manifestation of love? Is it better to live in Motherland full of hatred or away from it full of love? Is love of the Motherland caused by desire to preserve and pass on one’s genetic material? Is all love caused by that?

Yurii Andrukhovych - Ukrainian poet, prose writer and essayist Yuri Andrukhovych was born in 1960 in Stanislav (Ukraine). Podervyansky’s vulgar plays mock post-Soviet mentality
Every modern take on famous Shakespeare plays comes with repercussions. So when Ukrainian writer Les Podervyansky turned Hamlet into an alcoholic psycho and his father into a gay man, he thought that this plot would only make for a fun read among his friends. He was wrong.
http://www.kyivpost.com/guide/all/podervyanskys-vulgar-plays-mock-post-soviet-mental-100785.html

Unknown said...

Podervianskyi wrote most of his works in the Soviet Union in the mid to late 1980s, a time of stagnation in politics and social life—the of era of "zastoy" and the time of rapid changes in consciousness. He observed the people in that situation, their reactions and behaviour. And most thoroughly he watched the speech patterns of outsiders and commoners, people from the country. The author places common people in grotesque absurd situations and shows how they would act and speak much the same regardless of what happens.

As with most European countries, Ukraine has a well established literary community. In the past many stories where likely passed on by word of mouth until they were eventually committed to written form. As a result, many old Ukrainian fables and stories abound in printed Ukrainian literature today. Besides this, the 20th century has seen the emergence of several well-liked writers and poets and their works have become popular. Those viewed by the Ukrainian public as truly great writers have become literary icons amongst their own people and in many ways, their works have become symbolic of literature in Ukraine.

http://calvertjournal.com/comment/show/2176/russian-culture-in-ukraine-literature
Ukrainian literature was no “minor” phenomenon in the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Nikolai Gogol (or Mykola Hohol, to Ukrainians), whose short story The Overcoat (1842) was seen by Dostoevsky as the founding text of Russian literature, was Ukrainian. He came from a bilingual family and was obsessed with Ukrainian culture. His earlier works are often dismissed as less serious, in part because they deal with provincial Ukraine, and not the seat of imperial power, as in his Petersburg tales, or with the wider expanses of Russia, as in Dead Souls (1841). To most Russians, Gogol’s Ukrainian origins remain unknown or merely incidental.

Unknown said...

Many works of contemporary Ukrainian writers are concentrated on darker sides of human life, violence and crisis. This came about as a reaction to the false and compulsory optimism of the official socialist realist literature.

There are numerous literary festivals in Ukraine, most important are the Lviv international literary festival, Meridian Czernowitz and Kyivski lavry.

Some Ukrainian authors write in a mixture of Ukrainian and Russian called surzhyk (Bohdan Zholdak, Les Poderevyansky, Volodymyr Dibrova, Myhaylo Brynyh) using it to create a comic effect as this is the language of the marginalized.

A number of writers of Ukraine write in Russian language. Andriy Kurkov is the best known of them. Also a great number of contemporary Russian science fiction writers originally come from Ukraine or still live there (H. L. Oldie, Alexander Zorich, Yuri Nikitin, Andrey Valentinov, Marina and Sergey Dyachenko and Vladimir Arenev).

Podervianskyi's works have often been criticized because of his use of vulgar unprintable language. They are written mostly in Surzhyk and include much swearing and obscenities, which make them appear as if they were composed by an uneducated person. Often it seems that the only reason one would read the works is for their comic impact and to hear creative swearing. But this is not the case. The numerous citations from Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Taoism and dzen buddhism philosophers give the idea of several intellectual layers in his works.

Podervianskyi's Hamlet is a short, satiric retelling of Hamlet by William Shakespeare, set in an imaginary Denmark that closely resembles the Soviet Union of the 1980s. A bored and indifferent hero doesn't care about religion, revenge, truth, or politics; all he wants is to get drunk. Eventually he kills everyone, including his father, and he is taken to an asylum by a famous psychiatrist Sigmund Freud.

This play is one of the shortest and at the same time one of the most often referred to and cited in unofficial communication and in public critical literature and media discourse. Its plot is a parody of a classical play by a Soviet writer Maksim Gorky, an idyllic myth of totalitarian Communist ideology. In Gorky's play a hero named Danko leads poor people to the light and happiness through hardships and darkness, burns his own heart to show them the way and dies after this self-sacrifice. Les Podervianskyi's Danko is a rather strange and pathetic fellow, he is also leading a mob of people somewhere but he does not know the way and as he is afraid that people would be angry with his poor directions he burns his heart first, then his liver and finally his kidneys. He dies without any sense and is forgotten by the mob at once.

A group of passive art-men live in a freight car, eat state-supplied noodles every day, and do absolutely nothing except pseudo-intellectual chat. They are completely happy inside because they are guaranteed their supply of noodles. They are too scared to leave the car for fear of losing their daily meal. On the contrary, local passers-by (non-art-men) are extremely intrigued by what is happening inside, and seek whatever ways to get into the community. In the end, car brakes are removed, it rolls and crashes offscene.
