Armenian Literature

The contemporary Armenian Literature is characteristic for its large differentiation and, not less importantly, marked by the change of generations. In the first years after the fall of the Soviet regime, Hrant Matevosyan (1935-2002) was one of the most significant personalities, while today, it is hard to talk about any author with such a dominant position, or about domination tendencies or movements. This period is distinctive for their anchoring in the small epic genres (short stories in the first place) and poetry.

A čo ju inšpirovalo k napísaniu takejto knihy? “One day my father, who always talked to me about what had happened, looked at me with a serious expression and said, ‘Tell my story,’” Chesnut said. “That was my inspiration – it’s a miracle he ever made it.”

Do zoznamu autorov arménskej literatúry by som určite zaradila rusko-arménsku spisovateľku Veru Nazarian. Našla som na stránke fantasy-magazine poviedku Very Nazarian, volá sa "The story of love."

Gurgen Khanjyan is one of the most widely read authors in the last decades and he has a fixed place in literature mostly among young readers.
His most known novels are The Hospital, Get on the A Train or the newest novel Yenok's Eye. They reflect the lowest instincts of humans in present.
Hero of his books is a person who refuses the society and institutions of society which provoke a resistance in him. He is “morally” sick. Gurgen is one of the best who show the bottom of life and human soul.

Vardan Partamyan is an armenian writer of science fiction (more accurate: post-apocalyptic and dystopian) literature. He was born in Yerevan, Armenia, where this genre of literature still isn’t very popular. While being in USA because of his studies, he found out that being armenian feels very special and important to him. After returning back home, he started writing numerous non-fiction publications in which he dealt with the challenges facing his newly independent country.

Later, he started writing fantasy and sci-fi stories – it was his lifelong dream. In his work, he mixes styles of his favourite authors (such as Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien, Harry Harrison, Alfred Bester, Ernest Hemingway, Homer and Ian Fleming) with eternal themes of freedom, self discovery quests and the background of unknown often presented in fantasy.

If you click on link below, you’ll find an interview with Vardan in which he’s confronted about his work as author, about his motives, ideas and about why he decided to write this kind of literature. He’s very inspirational, polite and nice person and I gladly recommend this video to you (whole interview is in english):

Guyn Literary Awards is a competition for women fiction writers in armenian language announced by The First Armenian Literary Agency. There is no age limitation. The topic of the Guyn is color. The authors send their short stories which will be posted on www.imyerevan.com, but the short stories must be anonymous to prevent readers from some influence, to let them focus just on the story and not the writer. Finally, the jury will choose the winner whose award is following: contract with the agency on local publication of a book, translation into English and international representation of rights.(1) The deadline of Guyn had been prolonged by November 1, 2014.

A namiesto srdca
zavesil mi husle...
Bývam v mandzarke
tónu fis...
***
Ty si čas,
ja som pečať vodnej ruže
v rozprávke tvojho jazera...
Voda je môj list,
ktorý som poslal zďaleka,
prečítaj si ho a usmej sa...
Ty si čas,
ja som zlomená vlna hodín,
ktorá hľadá nadčasovosť,

Information about modern armenian literature can be found on this webpage: http://1litagency.am/eng/index.html
This website was created with a single goal - to make armenian literature known abroad.
You can find there list of authors, illustrators, their books and links to their own webpages along with short biographies of writers.
It sums up armenian poetry non-/fictional prose, books for children... and it's really user-friendly.

Odporúčam, ak hľadáte informácie o arménskych autoroch ;)

In the world of book professionals there is a saying that not being at the Frankfurt Book Fair means you do not exist for the book world. Well, the Book Platform project exists and was present at the biggest international book fair for the first time this year in various ways. The project was presented within the public debate on "International cooperation between translation funding organizations" organized at the Weltempfang salon of the fair. An exceptionally well visited event with some 100 people from the book world: mostly funding and advocacy organizations, literary translators and independent publishers interested in international cooperation. The debate was followed by an informal reception for networking and further exchange. Information on the Book Platform was also offered at the Georgian national stand that for the last few years sets up a standard on how the literature of a "EU neighboring" country can be presented to international audience. The stand was organized by our partner organization in Georgia, the GPBA (Georgian Book Publishers Association) in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture

Arménská literatura , staví na nepřerušené tradici a je syntézou východních a západních prvků. Koncem 4. stol. bylo vytvořeno písmo, což podnítilo rozvoj literatury. V 5. stol. převládala díla historická (M. Chorenaci, Korjun). V 7. Vznikali novely a povídky s etickým zájmem (např. Z. Chalaphjan, H. Mathevosjan, A. Ajvazjan).

Návrat krále Tiridata a život sv. Řehoře vyličuje Agathangelos v témž století, a další dějiny Armenie až do r. 390 vypisuje Faustus z Byzancie. Sahak a Mesrop vysílali své učenníky do nejznamenitějších škol řeckých, syrských a egyptských, kdež tito naučivše se důkladně různým jazykům obohacovali později armenskou literaturu překlady nejznamenitějších děl cizích a rovněž nabývali způsobilosti podnikati práce samostatné. Rovněž Koriun, jenž mimo jiné vylíčil kolem roku 450 život Mesropův a vynalezení armenského písma.

Matouše a sv. Jana (první polovice), pak ke knihám proroka Isaiáše a k epištolám sv. Pavla. Sepsal znamenité »Dějiny Armenie«, dílo o rhétorice podlé rhétorů řeckých a geografii rovněž na základě řeckých pramenů; připisují mu i dvě homilie k poctě sv. panen Ripsimy a Gajany; psal prý též kommentáře k armenské grammatice. Všecka jeho díla vyšla tiskem v Benátkách r. 1843 a 1865. – Co do jazyka blíží se Chorenskému nejvíc David filosof (žil kolem r. 490), nazývaný »Nepřemožitelným« (anjaλth), jenž překládal mnoho z Aristotela a mimo jiné sepsal samostatné dílo »Filosofické definice«. Příčina toho spočívá v tom, že perští Sásánovci, k jejichž panství tou dobou Armenie náležela, bránili Armenům choditi do škol řeckých. Jedinou důležitější událostí toho století jest začátek armen. letopočtu. Patriarcha Mojžíš II. svolal totiž r. 552 synodu do Tvinu, kde usneseno, aby začátek armenského letopočtu byl kladen na den 11. července 552 po Kr. – V lepším poněkud světle jeví se nám století VII. Historik Jan Mamikonean vyličuje tehdejší války proti Peršanům, a Sebêos píše historii Hérakleiovu. Do ruštiny ji přeložil K. P. Patkanov pod názvem Istorija imperatora Jirakla (Petrohr., 1862). Dílo to vyšlo též v překladě francouzském (Paříž, 1856) a ruském Patkanova (Istorija chalifov Levonda, Petrohrad, 1862).

Nejznamenitější spisovatel XII. století jest Nerses II. Klajetsi, patriarcha, od r. 1166 – 1173. Hlavně vynikl v básnění a theologii. »Isus ordį náleží k nejkrásnějším básním armenským. Mimo to skládal překrásné hymny církevní. Básně jeho vyšly tiskem v Benátkách r. 1830. – Jako theolog proslul skládáním modliteb plných vznešenosti, jež byly přeloženy do mnohých jazykův, epištolami o různých otázkách mravoučných a dogmatických, jakož i kommentáři k Písmu svatému. – Druhou ozdobou stol. XII. jest Nerses Lambronatsi, vynikající básník, důkladný učenec a horlivý kazatel. Souborné vydání jeho spisů vyšlo v Benátkách r. 1847. Zdařilá díla theologického obsahu psali učenci Ignatius a Sergius. Jan Sarkavag byl theolog i historik ne nepatrný. Nad něj prý vynikal Matouš z Urhaje (čili Edessy), jenž vylíčil historické události l. 952 – 1132. Dílo toto až do roku 1136 dovedl kněz Řehoř. Do frančtiny je přeložil Dulaurier (Paříž, 1858). Kolem r. 1180 psal Mchitar Goš první sbírku armenských bajek. V XIII. století literární rozvoj v Armenii opět klesá. Nejznamenitějším spisovatelem toho věku jest Vardan Veliký z Bardzerberdu v Kilikii. Sepsal důležité dějiny od počátku světa až do r. 1267, kommentáře k některým knihám sv. Písma, homilie, hymnus k poctě sv. Řehoře Osvětitele a sbírku bajek pod názvem »Kniha lišákovæ (Paříž, 1825). (t., 1873 – 74). V XIII. stol. žil rovněž historik Mechithar Erivanský, jehož dílo vydal Patkanov (Petrohrad, 1867) a později je přeložil pod názvem Chronografičeskaja Istorija Mechitara Ajrivanskago (t., 1869). – Vahram Rabuni, tajemník krále Lva III. (1269 – 89), sepsal veršem historii Rubenovcův až do r. 1289. Arcibiskup Štěpán Orbelean sepsal cenné dílo »Dějiny provincie Siunikä«, jakož i několik jiných prací drobnějších.

Ve století XIV. zanedbáváno vzdělávání dle spisů řeckých, a spisovatelé brali své vzory hlavně z latinské literatury scholastické, čímž armenský jazyk toho věku utrpěl tou měrou, že ho nelze již zváti klassickým. Poslední, jejž někteří čítají ještě mezi klassiky, jest Jan Erznkatsi (†1326). Zůstavil hojně spisův obsahu filologického, theologického a astronomického.

Extract from Aram Mamikonyan´s Two poems; one of them is called marijuana:
"the walls in the room start shaking
shattering the cup, the alarm clock, the records and the books to pieces,
everything appeared at my hand
now they can really think
what a lustful night we are having

meanwhile childhood was my last telescope
through which God could be seen from the earth
yet i left it hanging on the neck of my adultry
during one of our wars"

Other interesting title for poem cames from Tigran Paskevichyan: Hangover
"Lend me a hand, my dears and nears,
I have run out of my wine
in the cup of my three and thirty years.
I get sober from
the morning bolls; lend me a hand.
Does the wind blow late, or
Won’t your hand find me anymore?
I depart unhurriedly in a slow pace, of course.
Catch up with me, if you want to make me yours,
My body avoids warmness,
Burn it, if your faith is growing dim.
Don’t resent the locomotive hooter, but
disappoint from the sadness of the waves.
I am your secret dream. “To be nothing.”
I am your life’s presence in a bird.
Carry that cross—from your dear brothers and sisters.
Remember them with pleasure at leisure.
If it’s not late (it’s never late)
recall a piece of chalk
draw a deep blue sky one the wallpaper
of the world—and go for a walk."

This is a part of one of his poems published in the slovak literary magazine - Revue svetovej literatúry (Review of the World Literature) The poem is translated by slovak translator, journalist and teacher Valerij Kupka.

NA POČIATKU BOLO SLOVO
Neviem,
Boh mlčí alebo hovorí?
Havran Edgara Poa
mi povedal:
Boh zároveň mlčí aj hovorí.
Pýtam sa havrana:
Kde je Edgar Poe,
kde je teraz?
Havran hovorí:
Navždy utíchol,
ale mojím jazykom bude hovoriť večne.
Hovorím havranovi:
Opakuješ stále to isté slovo: "Nevermore, nevermore."

Havran povedal:
Na počiatku bolo slovo,
nie slová.
Kde je veľa slov, je veľa zmätku.
Jasné?
Nevermore, - odvetil som.
Žiaľ, nevermore.

The literary process is gradually moving online. This is fostered by the Internet becoming more and more accessible, current issues in the literary publishing industry, and the high costs of print books, magazines, or newspapers »
Dozens of Armenian-language literary sites and blogs can be found online today, the vast majority of which are personal blogs where the authors post their own writing or collect their favorite literary works.
Apart from websites and blogs, literature is published also as Facebook notes or even status updates. On Facebook, there are around two dozen Armenian literary groups and pages, where links are posted and personal writing is shared.
The majority of those uploading literary texts online are youth, who are better at mastering internet and digital skills.
Armenia's scant literary press (two newspapers and three journals), the lack or negligible amount of honoraria, the scarcity of bookstores, and the lack of readers prepared to pay for a contemporary Armenian author's book all drive writers to publish online. Synopsis of Khechoyan´s novel "The black bok and a heavy bug":
The black book and a heavy bug is a novel about the war as it is and as it is seen by the author. The main character is a man of the art, who sees the shadows of hell and holy light, walks on the edge of death and happiness. He is the one who has the faith in the humans and is sure that the HUMAN will always be the winner. The book is written as the diary, which makes the literary work sound more realistic and true to life. The war doesn’t have a plot, it is an uninterrupted motion, where the human’s fate is in danger, and everything is done for the aim of victory.

Levon Khechoyan´s historical novel The King Arshak and the Eunuch Drastamat was published in 1995. The novel is based on the national mythology and the historical events of 350 – 368 during the reign of the King Arshak. The book reveals the spiritual life and complicated political relations of the time period. The life philosophy of the author expressed in the book is still up-to-date nowdays, and this makes the book sound rather fateful.

The framework of Levon Khechoyan’s last novel "The Book of Mher´s Door" is the ethnic epic, its unique prose interpretation. The combination of essayist, journalistic, and stylistic devices as well as scientific and fictional analyses and descriptions, pursues only one goal. Khechoyan puts everything, even his literature, on the sacrificial altar in order to establish justice on earth.

Gurgen Khanjyan
“The Hospital” is a novel about a young man facing the totalitarian regime for the first time in his life. “The Hospital”, where he was captured by deception is the allegory for the Communist Party. The author wrote this book on the time of Soviet Union collapse and establishment of the independent state in Armenia. Exactly in the same way the main character of his novel lives throughout the changes and reflects the reality of the time. First he finds himself in an absurd situation, where he is losing all his dreams, gets broken both physically and morally, all these happening to him in the Hospital. Then he appears in a completely different situation where the darkness, cold, hunger and indefiniteness rule the world around him.

Jonathan (Hovhannes) Webster, has a very solid twenty-five year track record as a professional Writer, Journalist, and Editor.
These skills have been backed up with academic qualifications in Journalism, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Publishing Studies.
Jonathan Webster has authored The Rough Guide to Classical Music and to also recently Flying High: The Era of The Luxury Private Jet.
Jonathan has just completed his first novel, which is a story about the Armenian Genocide for young adults called: I Heard The Bulbul Sing. As a half-British half-Armenian writer, this is a story with which he feels a very close, personal connection.

Unknown said...

Jonathan (Hovhannes) Webster
I Heard The Bulbul (Nightingale) Sing is a story set at the time of the Armenian Genocide (1915 -1923).
The story centres on a girl called Mariam (Nalbandian) and her brother, Aprahan, who are born in the historic eastern-Turkish Armenian city of Van to a prosperous Armenian merchant family. At first, Mariam and Aprahan's childhood is both happy and peaceful. But as they enter their teens, the murderous hate that was to envelope the Armenians (at the hands of the racially extremist/supremacist Ottoman Young Turks) threatens to destroy them and all their loved ones!
Despite many dangers, and a terrifying bogeyman in the shape of the historical real-life figure of Djevdet Bey (who was the sadistic military governor of Van Province at the time), Mariam and Aprahan finally manage to find salvation and sanctuary in the United States.
I Heard The Bulbul Sing is a story written primarily for older children and young adults mainly set mainly in western Armenia (eastern Turkey) at the time of the Armenian Genocide. However, as the creator and writer, it is my hope that many adults will find much to enjoy as well.

Poem "Sometimes" by Armenuhi Sisayn translated to English by Samvel Mkrtchyan

Sometimes the angels
are dying to see
something that’s not
theirs-
they get punished:
their wings get burnt.
The morale is
curiosity kills
the angel,
sometimes.

***
Between my yesterday and tomorrow
today is threatening me
in the face of
torment.

Between my enter and exit
the closed doors
are compressing me
with airless space.

***
Ripeness makes things sweet-
don’t taste the early
fruit; leave it
to time. It leaves the fruit alone
to become fully
grown.

Poetry in Armenia is the art of self expression. Eloquently composed and carefully chosen words combined together to create a strong and a heart felt message. It is a reflection of the writers thoughts, felling and emotions durning his joy, sorrow triumph and defeat.
There is a little part of Archbishop Khoren Nar Bey de Lusignan titled „To my sister“ , which interested me
Fain would I be to thee, my sister sweet,
Like the bright cloud beneath Aurora s feet
A pedestal to help thee Mount on high
Into the blessed peace of the blue sky.

The zephvr would I be, to which is given
To waft the rose s fragrance up to heaven,
That thy pure soul, amid life s stress and strain,
Might not exhale its perfume sweet in vain.

A arménska knižná tradícia siaha do hlbokej minulosti. Celkovo je tu okolo sedemnácťtisíc rukupisov- diela z histórie, filozofie, matematiky, geografie, medicíny, kulinárskeho umenia, originálne diela arménskych autorov i preklady z rôznych starobylých jazykov. nevyčíslitelnú hodnotu majú ručne písané a bohato ilustrované evanjeliá.

Ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide publishers in Armenia intend to re-publish old books related to the topic and issue new ones.
Restoration and recirculation of ignored values and revealing of new facts: this is the result of the 4-year activity of the publishers.
Editor-in-chief of the “Antares” publishing house Arkmenik Nikoghosyan says they intend to publish an interesting series.
“In 1930s the Society of Friends of Martyred Writers in Paris, a group of French intellectuals, published the books of writers that fell victim to the Armenian Genocide,” Arkmenik Nikoghosyan said speaking to Public Radio of Armenia. “Antares” intends to re-publish the series not only in Armenian, he added.
The collection of works by martyred writer Ruben Zardaryan will also be published in the near future. His works were last published in Armenia in 1960s. Nikoghosyan said the research has revealed his works not known to wider public published in the press.
Another publication ahead of the genocide centenary will be the “Martyred writers” volume. When compiling the book the editors have taken into consideration the involvement of Western Armenian writers in literature at the time, rather than the values they have created.

Razmik Davoyan is Armenia’s most prominent living writer. He published a number of collections of poetry, children’s books and prose works in Armenia and many translations throughout the world.
His first poem was published in 1957 in the Leninakan Daily Worker. His works were widely translated all over the former Soviet Union and published in innumerable literary magazines and journals f. ex. in Italy, France, Syria or former Yugoslavia. He was also translated into Russian, Czech and English.
His children's poetry book Winter Snowflake, Spring Blossom, published in Russian translation in 1980, sold four hundred and fifty thousand copies in only two weeks all over the former Soviet Union.
Three significant works were blocked by the Soviet régime (“Requiem” was blocked for five years before it was published in Yerevan in 1969; “Massacre of the Crosses” was first published in Beirut in 1972; and “Toros Rosslin” was first published in New York in 1984 because of the block on its publication in Soviet Armenia.)

Razmik Davoyan has received numerous literary awards. His first prize was Armenia’s Youth Organization Central Committee Prize for Literature in 1971. In 1986 he received Armenia’s State Prize for Literature.
Other awards: the Order of St Mesrop Mashtots in 1997 (the highest non-military order of the Republic of Armenia), the President’s Prize for Literature (2003), First Degree Medal for Services to the Motherland (2010), and the CIS Interstate Prize for literature (2012).

W. N. Herbert has written an introduction for the book "Whispers and Breath of the Valleys".

Razmik Davoyan is one of a handful of names in Armenian literature which define not only an era, but go much further to embody an entire history. Davoyan's work reflects the experiences of an old nation, yet it is fresh and very personal at the same time. It is impossible not to feel the struggles, hopes and aspirations of his native land in his work.
"Whispers and Breath of the Valleys" is a book charged with energy. W. N. Herbert, in his introduction, describes it as being 'saturated with joy'. Davoyan displays 'an equal empathy for the suffering and the exultant, finding for both a voice that implies such oppositions are finally resolved in the poem'. This is accessible, readable poetry from a world, a way of life and a culture unfamiliar to most English-language readers and, as such, it fascinates and enthrals.

Armen of Armenia, real name Armen Ohanyan, born in 1979 in Yerevan,is a writer of prose and public relations expert. He studied at the Yerevan State University and he has bachelor´s degree in Philosophy. Between 2000 and 2007, he led an isolated life as a teacher in a village near the borders of Armenia and Iran. He started his literary career relatively late, only after his thirtieth birthday.
He writes inovative, experimental prose, his works have unusual structure and they are interactive, the choice of antagonists is alwaly unexpected and rather eccentric. The reader has opportunity to be part of narration and to end the story with his own conclusion.
He criticizes contemporary Armenian literature and calls it merely prescriptive.
A number of his stories has been awarded national prizes. His short stories have been translated into Russian, English, Dutch, French and German.
He wrote two short stories in cooperation with other writers (The Flying Bicycle with Aram Pachyan and The Last Breakfast with Lilit Karapetyan) and, in 2013, collection of short stories The Return of Kikos was published.
More about Armen of Armenia here and here.

The Return of Kikos is Armen of Armenia´s first book. It´s a collection of short stories which are first examples of Armenian interactive prose. The short stories are structured as games for readers, who should act as co-authors. Game is an important feature in his work. It is his unique way to involve readers and a solution to the problem of isolation in the modern Armenian literature.
More about the book here.

Writer Vahan Ishkhanyan writes in his article about Armen Shekoyan’s novel “Armenian Time”: “53-year-old Armen Shekoyan is the author of 11 books of poetry. The last collections “Anti-poetry” and “Yerevan Hotel,” break the conceptions of the Armenian reality regarding poetry (about that in the “Armenian Time,” November 7, 2003, “Street rhythm deafens the eternal” article). After turning 50, Shekoyan decided to write prose exclusively. He published the collection of stories “The Road of Silk.” Link here

This is a part of the B - the second part of the poem "Love." It was translated from Armenian into English by Shushan Avagyan.
The rest of the poem is available on this blogsite where you can also listen to the author´s reading the poem.

B

This is flesh that surrendered to death.
This is blood that stuttered once, then was silenced forever.
Oh what tragic celebration, what joyful grieving,
and inside our hearts are warping.
We weep, for it’s a wedding,
but the groom, alas, is not with us,
for it’s a wedding,
but the guests are, oh, not worthy.
And we laugh,
for even though the seedling perished,
it will be fecund.
He took our ailments, he took our pain,
this Son of Man,
he cured us from death. But with man’s kiss
he was infected with death.

You thought you were hunter of men,
You—a carpenter’s boy, son of Mary,
but behold how men caught you with death,
oh behold how men caught you with death.
And here you are ceasing from yourself,
and here you are no more.
And inside our hearts are warping.

We know, those who love your heavenly father,
are like a mother, sister or brother to you.
And we, too, are weeping like a mother, grieving like a sister,
standing alone, lost like a brother.
Your mother should’ve gone blind,
not to have seen your head drop on your chest,
your sister should’ve gone dry,
not to have seen you so tortured, so beaten,
your brother should’ve died,
not to have seen you made a laughing stock . . .
But we are also weeping for our own fate,
for our sons we weep and wail,
blessed are those who are barren,
woe to those who are pregnant and feeding,
oh glorious mountains, fall on us now,
green hills, cover us soon,
and though we tamed the wind and sea,
though we treaded on waters, cured the blind,
made the limp walk,
and though now we clone man in our own image,
giving him breath, our hearts are not happy,
our tongues, alas, are not joyous,
and our flesh does not live in hope,
for we are in the house of death,
denied of the joy of your presence . . .

"Armenian literature is literature that experiments, tries to find itself. It is literature that looks to free itself of all Soviet censorship and sometimes chooses street talk, even vulgar language, and breaks with classic forms of narration, etc. Armenian literature is rife with names, with writers who straddled two different eras and who made the country’s literary renewal possible..." (Avetissian, A., Matevossian, M., Transcript 2013 ) If you are curious about what would nine from ten Armenians would say if you asked them to tell you about the literature of his or her country, then read the Editorial to Transcript-Europe’s online review of international writing
